From the Associated Press:

United Parcel Service Inc. said Monday it will buy Netherlands-based TNT Express NV for $6.77 billion (€5.16 billion) in a cash deal that will create a company with annual sales of €60 billion.

Atlanta-based UPS is the world’s largest delivery company, while TNT, headquartered in Hoofddorp, Netherlands, is the second-biggest express mail company in Europe behind Germany’s DHL. The combination will have 475,000 employees worldwide and increase UPS’s international sales to around 36 percent of its total from 26 percent at present.

“Why is TNT very attractive?” said UPS Chief Financial Officer Kurt Kuehn at a press conference in Amsterdam. Because it has “operations in areas where we’re underserved. Brazil. Australia. The Middle East. The road and train network in Europe.”

It remains to be seen, what this will do to international freight rates.

Truck Volume Forecast To Grow 3.9 Percent In 2012

The Journal of Commerce is reporting that truck volumes will rise in 2012:

The trucking industry will outperform the U.S. economy this year, with truck freight growing 3.9 percent, greater than overall GDP, according to FTR Associates.

The research firm’s Trucking Conditions Index slipped slightly in January to 6.1, still a solid positive reading. Higher fuel prices are pressuring carriers, FTR said.

Any index reading above zero indicates an “adequate” trucking environment, with readings above 10 signaling favorable pricing and volumes for truckers.

This report coincides with earlier stories that freight shipments had already reached new highs. This new data combined with rising diesel fuel prices will put the squeeze on freight shippers to find cheap shipping rates.

Trucking Hiring Up In February

From the Journal of Commerce:

For-hire motor carriers added more than 10,000 jobs last month, BLS data shows

The trucking industry increased hiring 3.7 percent year-over-year in February, a slower pace than in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Trucking employers increased hiring 4.1 percent in January from a year ago, and 3.7 percent year-over-year in December, according to seasonally adjusted data.

The increase in trucking employment comes as overall non-farm employment rose by 227,000 jobs in February, a 1.6 percent year-over-year increase.
The jobless rate remained constant at 8.3 percent in February, with about 12.8 million persons unemployed, the Labor Department agency said Friday.

Whether this trend will grow within the freight shipping industry remains to be seen.

Air Freight Rates From China Skyrocket For iPad Shipments

Interesting freight shipping news here:

Apple has bought up a ton of air freight space over the next few weeks to make sure the next iPad is available in the United States soon, according to reports.

This is placing a squeeze on other companies who want to ship material from China.

MacRumors reports one shipper says freight rates from China have risen 20% in the last week. Another says his company has been scrambling to find space for shipments.

Separately, Apple Insider reports that DHL is preparing to handle massive shipments this week, driving up shipping costs from Asia to the U.S.

The launch for the latest iPad is scheduled for this Wednesday.

Rethinking Your Freight Shipping Strategy

All the signs are pointing towards higher freight rates for shippers in 2012:

Fuel costs are higher

Truckload carriers are bullish on rates

Freight shipments are up increasing demand for equipment.

Being in the midst of a questionable economic recovery, it becomes that much more critical to the bottom line to come up with solutions to lower freight costs. There are several strategies to be used in order to save money on freight shipping.

  • Consolidate – Whether it is taking LTL loads and making them full truckload or maximizing LTL shipments, most shippers have the capability to analyze data to see where they can consolidate freight.
  • Intermodal – It will take some time to figure in additional shipping times, but once that is worked out, using intermodal as opposed to traditional truckload shipping can save a great deal of money.
  • Technology – Leverage the technology that is available today. If you don’t have a TMS system or methods by which you can measure the impact of your freight spending, consider using a service like The Freight Rate Co. to find the best rates.

What are you doing to re-think your shipping strategy?

Diesel Prices At 10 Month High

This is surely going to affect shipping rates. From the Journal of Commerce:

Diesel prices across the U.S. topped $4 a gallon in the week ending Feb. 27, jumping 9.1 cents to a nearly 10-month high as oil prices fell after a seven-day surge.
Prices rose to $4.051 at the fastest pace since the first week ending in November, when prices jumped 10 cents to $3.887. The average price is 33.5 cents higher the same period ago, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

With the situation in Iran and Syria, chances are, prices will continue to climb upwards as we move towards the spring.
